Our body is made up of more than
65% water. Water is essential for all functions in our body,
carries nutrients to our cells and removes waste matter. In addition
water acts as natural lubricant to limbs and joints.
Recognising the importance of water for our healthy living, Health
Authorities recommend we drink not less than 8 glasses of water
per day. It is difficult to comply with this recommendation unless
we like the taste of the water we drink and we are sure about its
quality.
Today, it is virtually impossible to find pure water in its natural
state as H2O. There are two main types of contaminants found in
water: The first: Bacteriological, including E- coli and cryptosporidium.
The second is chemical which includes organic chemicals such as
pesticides, herbicides and PCBs and inorganic chemicals which include
heavy metals such as lead and mercury.
Bacteriological contamination of water can cause various diseases
such as fever, diarrhea, stomach cramps, vomiting and sometimes
it can lead to death. Chemical contamination of water is very serious
and more difficult to treat, and can cause carcinogenic diseases.
